Yes, that was me.  Terrain plays a big role in how easy it is to defend a location, especially against tanks.  But it would take someone with more expertise than me to say whether this terrain is favorable or not.

Another thing I thought of is that media reports often talk about this or that side taking ground as evidence that they are winning.  But it's not necessarily evidence of winning.  Against an opponent using a defense in depth strategy, taking ground could be a sign that you are just walking further into their trap.

But from the pictures we saw of the enormous Kurdish fixed defensive positions, I don't think that's what's happening.  The Kurds are probably just losing against the Turks in northern Syria right now.
