Donward
This looks interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_guMksYm3TY Looks to be an improvement on the 1841 Mississippi Rifle (as Ian mentions in the video). But the Sharps Carbine/Rifle is preferable as a directly competing weapon (Breachloading, single shot, paper cartridge).
Toxn
Eh, I just like it for being a muzzle-loader what is easier to load. Freaking ramrods, man.
Donward
Eh, I just like it for being a muzzle-loader what is easier to load. Freaking ramrods, man. It is an attractive looking firearm and you would be a happy soldier in 1860-62 indeed if you were able to get your hands on one. As Ian pointed out, the loading action appears a bit fiddly and I imagine that it would begin fouling up pretty fast if you fired multiple rounds. Which is probably why that example was broken. Being able to fire from the prone is a force multiplier as evidenced by General Buford's cavalry roughing up Henry Heth's division on the first day at Gettysburg. Granted, Buford's boys had seven-shot Spencer repeaters but I think the analogy stands somewhat.
Sturgeon
Blackpowder fouling worst fouling.A lot of people scratch their heads and wonder why the hell armies couldn't come up with successful breechloading/repeating/semiauto/automatic/freaking laser rifles earlier. Almost all of those people have never fired an actual blackpowder weapon for any significant length of time. Toxn
Blackpowder fouling worst fouling. A lot of people scratch their heads and wonder why the hell armies couldn't come up with successful breechloading/repeating/semiauto/automatic/freaking laser rifles earlier. Almost all of those people have never fired an actual blackpowder weapon for any significant length of time. And the worse the quality of ingredients, the worse the fouling. Some of the muskets and I made had to be pretty much cleaned out between each shot due to the rapid build-up of blobs of black tar-stuff. Which would then invariably harden into solid chunks wherever it landed.
Donward
As hide bound and conservative as military procurement is, there were good reasons why armies stuck with tried and true weapons for so long. Black powder and lead foul un is about terrible. Try firing ablackpowder cap and ball revolver through more than one or two reloads. Donward
They take a particular form of self hate to own. Particularly given the amount of crap reproduction models knocking about. The good news is I think they're still cheap and mostly unfired given the insane manual of arms and the prospect of blowing up your hand if you foul up. LoooSeR
Funny story about ASVK journy in Ukraine. Recently, this rifle was shown to Ukrainian/Kiev high level politicians, as "new Ukrainian rifle" SVM. Ukrainian TV runned a show/report about it: Now interesting part - this pro-Kiev soldier identified this rifle as ASVK that he was able to fire (one of the first on Kiev side), rifle was captured by 8th special forces regiment, after it was dropped by LPR fighters (it burned, missing some external parts and a magazine). https://www.facebook.com/kjjggkjgkj/posts/963721800317043?pnref=story After some field repairs: Rifle was covere by Ukr medias, including yellow press like Cencor.net http://censor.net.ua/photo_news/298558/prodayutsya_vo_vseh_voentorgah_donbassa_neojidannyyi_trofeyi_posle_razgroma_terroristov_fotoreportaj So, Mayak company, that showed this "new" SVM just added sight and local-made mag. This was stated by head of the organization-developer of a Ratnik - the Central Research Institute of precision engineering - Dmitry Semizorov. Exact figures of the order Semizorov not made public. But we know the estimated needs of the military - every year the army can buy 50 to 70 thousand sets." > So, in field tests from ~May of this year. http://ria.ru/defense_safety/20150610/1069159296.html Siberian Army Special Forces units are fully equipped with "Warrior". In particular, Army have complaints to helmets and backpacks. There are no complaints for weapons, but there are problems with the sights. As for the intelligence complex, control and communications, the soldiers asked for changes the interface and "buggy" maps. Some elements of the "warrior" has been already adopted by the Russian Defense Ministry, however, the decision to adopt a full set of equipment to be taken after the field test of the military gear, which started last year. Total set of advanced combat equipment includes ten sub-systems, which can be grouped into three categories: protection and equipment, weapons and sights, as well as reconnaissance. > Ratnik started small-scale tests in 2014, probably some parts of Ratnik actually were used for tests. Article also cover some equipment, like armor and smaller stuff. Ratnik-2 is in development, rumored that it will reach testing stage in 2030-2035. http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=2662746 Some specualtions about Ratnik-2.
