Right. Maybe the easiest explanation is that one of the two tanks tested had the wheel system while the other had the handle system?

Hm. It literally says "Traversing the turret with electrical power and turning the wheel", and in the second case "With electrical power and the control handle set to full speed". Weird. Does it sound plausible to manual traverse the turret a quarter turn in 6 seconds? What is the electrical power referring to in the first case?

In high ratio, and with an energetic operator, sure.

 

All the systems used in U.S. armor of the era were electro-hydraulically operated.

This post got a big update this week. 

 

Subjugated Shermans:  Sherman tanks captured and used by the Nazis Updated 10/2/16n-siPvp-tYI-1024x711.jpg1. This early production M4A1 75 tank has DV ports, and the stubby mantlet. it was captured from the 1st Armored Regiment of the First Armored Division of the US army, in Tunisia in 1943 and is being tested in Germany at Kummersdorf. Note the armor thickness and angle stenciled on the tank, the Germans were giving it an extensive workout during their testing.The tank was named War Daddy II.

Sometimes a tank crew can get spooked and bail out of a functional tank. Or a tank can be left disabled on the battlefield and be repaired by the bad guys. The Germans were so desperate for tanks they happily used any Shermans they captured, and unlike the T-34 they didn’t feel the need to modify the tank in any way. The Germans managed to capture Shermans from the Russians, UK, and Americans. The Japanese never captured an intact Sherman. I don’t think the Italians managed to capture one either.

Depending on the crew quality, little things can cause them to abandon  the tank, and it seems to be a universal problem, since I’ve read of just about all of the warring nations having crews bail out from fright when the tank had sustained only minor, or cosmetic damage.  In other cases, the tank takes real damage, like a lost track, an engine problem or a hit that took out an internal fixture, but an experienced crew might stay in the tank.  The crew has a duty to destroy the tank before leaving it behind. There is a whole procedure covering how to do it, and what to destroy if you only have a short amount of time, including many methods.  The methods range from blowing the tank up with special grenades, to just destroying the machine guns, main gun and radios.  This is covered inFM17-67 Crew Drill and Service of the Piece Medium Tank M4 Series.

There are many reasons why a crew might not be able to destroy their tank. If the crew is killed as they bailed out or after, or captured, since if they are under fire while they get out, the tank falling into enemy hands isn’t going to be on a soldier’s mind in many cases. In some cases the green crews who panic and bail out, just don’t bother even checking the tank over before running.  I’ve read of many cases of German crews just leaving the tank, hatches all open, without booby traps and walking off when their Panther inevitably broke down or ran out of gas.

Even though the Sherman was an automotive masterpiece the Germans could only dream of producing, they were still capable of keeping them running. A German tank mechanic would find even the A57 a breath of fresh air in ease of troubleshooting and reliability. They also liked to use the captured Shermans as ARVs, often with the turrets removed. Having a very tough powertrain and a reliable and robust motor is a very nice thing in a Armored Recovery Vehicle, and the Shermans was just that. It must have been terribly frustrating for the Germans to get a Bergepather in place to try and tow a broken down Panther, only to have it break down too!

Now onto the photos, sorry, but the Germans seem to be as bad at photography, at least of captured Shermans, as they are at tank design, so many of the images are small and blurry. The captions have been updated in great extent to the efforts of Roy Chow, who sent in a very nice comment correcting my many mistakes.  Thanks again Roy!

German_M4_Sherman_and_crew.jpg2. An M4A2 75 dry, large hatch Sherman, this was a very late production 75mm tank, near the end of the run. Note the armored patches on the hull, it has the large hatch hull but still had the dry ammo racks. The crew looks pretty pleased with their tank, it was more reliable, got better gas mileage and was more comfortable than than the Panzer III that were stuck in before. This was thought advisable in view (1) of the small ammount of mixed tracer and ball .30 ammunition in our lockers; and (2) of the short effective range of the .30 Lewis machine gun against aircraft. This done, the gun was found suitable for use. Ammunition (Armor Piercing with tracer) was broken out of the hold with the aid of the Chief Officer, the gun was test-fired and a two man crew trained and assigned General Quarters stations in the tank.

 
Next day a second tank was opened, the 37 mm. gun made ready and manned. One member of the Armed Guard and one of the ship’s crew were used as crew for each of the tank guns."

 

 

The Germans apparently only care about the Sherman out of the list of Lend Lease vehicles.

Is this from Sixth Army? I've seen reference to communiques; “According to intelligence reports, very strong panzer concentrations of US origin have entered the Stalingrad sector." but never managed to find them.

Considering there was a 37mm canister load,  and the odd turret of the M3 Medium had an absurd angle of elevation with a very fast traverse, results could have been amusing.

 

Also- The use of the Lewis in WW2 is all but forgotten. It was heavily used by a number of countries, but most consign it to being an "obsolete WW1 gun".  (Often by those championing the forward thinking and advanced engineering of the FG 42..)

Silly Colli. It's the Commies here we're talking about. During World War 2, the average family was around 28 members and they reproduced like rats. How else could they overwhelm the Aryan Supermen by shear numbers?

 

I mean, 172 percent of the Soviet males born in 1922 died before World War 2 was over!

Baryatinskiy writes that it took two days to clear a Sherman tank from grease after shipment to make it functional, plus the tanks were not shipped with ammunition inside. He rates this story as doubtful.

 

Would crated and gripon tanks have been greased? The weatherproofing methods don't seem all that consistent.

The pre-shipping preservation methods and practices were not at all standardized at the time the M3 was being cranked out.

 

 

If I can find it, there is a "tale" about the importance of proper pre shipment packaging and preservation involving M1919's.  Where one rusted to shit in a humid hold, and another (properly packed) fell overboard at unloading and was recovered weeks later, but was unscathed because of it's careful preparation.

 

The pinnacle of this concept was reached in the late 40's with the concept of packing six M1919's, six tripods and T&E's, and all associated spares in an oil filled drum about the size of a common 55 gallon oil drum but far more robust.

 

The idea was that one could open the top of the drum (filled with oil and an inert gas) pull out a "cage", let the mess drain into the drum, and have six ready to go Brownings, with tripods, etc.  And a large quantity of useable lubricant or fuel oil.  

 

The concept lived on for a time with "QECA" engine containers, though they were just nitrogen purged. .

One of the unique exhibits at Rock Island Arsenal is this M4A3E8 that has applique armor fitted. The display indicates that it was a 4th Armored Division tank knocked out during the Battle of the Bulge. I don't doubt it was 4th AD, but it was more likely knocked out during the Battle of Germany as these applique sets weren't commonly applied until February-March 1945. This particular tank took a pounding and seems to have been knocked out by a hit on the upper edge of the turret. I have never seen any description of the circumstances under which it was transferred back to the US. Very few combat veteran tanks were ever returned to the US after the war. Others include the M4A3E2 Cobra King at Ft. Benning and a M26 in NH.

I'm just beginning to watch this vid, Walter. It is fascinating, being an old film junkie, to see this is being shot on the Hollywood "Back lot" where so many Westerns of the 1930s and 1940s were made.

 

So the Army sent Five M4A1 to Hollywood film this? I figured it was Tennessee or Fort Knox heh.

Nah man. I am almost 100 percent certain those are Hollywood backlot locations. Either Warner Brothers or the Iverson Movie Ranch or something like that. Those oak trees are a dead give away.

Well, the big training center in southern Cali wasn't all that far away, so trucking them there wouldn't be hard. 

 

Maybe it was there then. But, man, these looks like filming locations right out of Stagecoach or Winchester '73. 

 

Watching the video, it is interesting just how much attention is being paid to countermeasures - when this was filmed in 1943 - to prevent tanks from being bombed and strafed by German airplanes. And almost little to anti-tank guns, mines and enemy infantry.

I think it was filmed before feedback from North Africa, the M4A1's in it are pretty early models, not DV early, but unimproved turrets without telescopic sites early.

Think this one is a WB production as well, the production quality and props/effects during the "combat" scene - and the M2 mocked up to look German @ ~4:47

This would be my guess as well.  The equipment used in the filming of "Sahara" in 1943 came from the 4th Armored Division which was training at the Desert Training Center.  The Armored Corps and Hollywood definitely had some sort of arrangement.
