These slats were free-floating in the wings.  When the wing began to stall, the low pressure of the stagnant air would cause the slats to move forward, which would allow airflow to come over the wings through the slot that opened.  This restored the lift on the wing and delayed the stall.

 

However, during hard maneuvering one wing's slats usually opened before the other (they weren't connected), causing the plane to roll to one side.  This could easily snatch the pilot's aim off-target if they were trying to shoot at an enemy (and if they were maneuvering hard enough to open the slats, often they were).
