@Bronezhilet was describing to me an interesting question about Syria; where are all the ISIS fighters?

Starting late in the Summer of 2017 the SAA sent some of its best formations and best allied forces to advance east through the desert and begin a fast-moving campaign of encirclement against ISIS.  This was a big change for a war that had been mostly grinding seiges.  ISIS was forced to flee east, leaving behind weapons and some pretty creepy underground bunkers.  Several groups of ISIS fighters were encircled and trapped in pockets.  These pockets were reduced with extreme prejudice by artillery and air power.  ISIS continued to make hit-and-run attacks and suicide attacks to slow down the SAA's advancing forces, but these weren't really counteroffensives, just delaying actions.  It was assumed that the majority of ISIS troops had escaped encirclement and would show up again further to the southeast, perhaps make a major last stand in Al Mayadin.

But so far, no enormous number of ISIS fighters that escaped encirclement in the desert has shown up.  Where are they?  There is still some fighting in Al Bukamal, but the SAA already controls half of the city.  That's not exactly the lengthy, weeks-long siege one would expect if it were teeming with ISIS.  Did ISIS run even further south and east?  Are they trying to escape?  Or were there never that many to begin with?

Raqqa, Deir Ezzor, & Mosul probably was the graves of most of ISIS's fighters if we assume they had fighting strength around 15,000 max at the start of 2017 and haven't been able to replenish with foreign fighters. A good bit might have trickled into Idlib too. It is a remarkable collapse nonetheless.
