Turkish artillery on Feb. 13 bombarded People's Protection Units (YPG) targets in northern Syria, Turkish security sources has told private broadcaster CNNTürk.

The targets hit were near the town of Azaz in northern Syria, a Turkish government source told Reuters, without elaborating on the extent of the shelling or why it had been carried out.

According to the sources, the Turkish military retaliated twice on Feb. 13 within its rules of engagement. The first incident occurred around 3 p.m., when Syrian regime forces fired mortar shells near Çalıboğazı Post in the border province of Hatay. The Turkish Armed Forces retaliated to the firing.

In the second incident, gunfire from the YPG-controlled Maranas, located in the southwest of Azez, targeted Turkey’s Akçağbağlar region.

The Turkish military retaliated for two hours within the rules of engagement, the sources said.

Saudi Arabia deploys more jets to Turkey

"Saudi warplanes are present with their crews to intensify aerial operations along with missions launched from bases in Saudi Arabia," Assiri said, without providing further details.

Assiri said the decision to deploy an unspecified number of jets to Turkey followed a meeting in Brussels of US-led anti-ISIL coalition members, who decided step up their fight against the Takfiris in Syria and Iraq.

He stressed that Saudi had made its decision in coordination with the coalition and said that a ground operation was being planned.

“There is a consensus among coalition forces on the need for ground operations and the kingdom is committed to that,” Assiri said.

“Military experts will meet in the coming days to finalize the details, the task force and the role to be played by each country.”

Turkey on Saturday hit Kurdish positions in northern Syria, further complicating efforts to end the war, which has killed more than 260,000 since it began in 2011.

Turkey calls for YPG withdrawal from Syria’s border

Having confirmed the shelling on the positions of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), Ankara has called for the withdrawal of YPG forces from northern Syrian border regions.

“The YPG will immediately withdraw from Azaz and the surrounding area and will not go close to it again,” said Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu during a live broadcast on Turkish TV on Saturday.

He also confirmed the shelling of positions recently retaken from the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group by the YPG affiliate the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), and added that they were carried out as “retaliation” and were “within the framework of the rules of engagement.”

Davutoglu added that Turkey would “retaliate against every step” made by the group.

Earlier, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the strategic Minnigh military airport and a village in the northwestern province of Aleppo had been shelled by Turkey.

Ankara considers the PYD as an ally of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which it has been battling for months, but to the US, the group is seen as part of the fight against the Daesh terrorists.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman John Kirby called on Turkey to halt military strikes on the PYD.

“We are concerned about the situation north of Aleppo and are working to de-escalate tensions on all sides,” he said.

Daesh terrorists, who have been wreaking havoc in Syria and Iraq and miles further in Libya, were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government. Ankara has reportedly provided support for the Takfiri militants operating inside Syria.

US urges Turkey to halt Syria strikes

The United States pressed Turkey on Saturday to halt military strikes on Kurdish targets Saturday in the northern province of Aleppo.

“We are concerned about the situation north of Aleppo and are working to de-escalate tensions on all sides,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

State Department spokesman John Kirby State-run news agency Anatolia, quoting a military source, said the armed forces shelled Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) targets around the town of Azaz.

“We have urged Syrian Kurdish and other forces affiliated with the YPG not to take advantage of a confused situation by seizing new territory,” Kirby said.

“We have also seen reports of artillery fire from the Turkish side of the border and urged Turkey to cease such fires.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Minnigh air base, recently taken by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia from Takfiri insurgents, was hit in the Turkish shelling.

Ankara considers the PYD and its YPG militia to be branches of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state.

“Turkey and the YPG share a serious threat of ISIL poised just to the east of the Azaz corridor,” Kirby added.

“We continue to encourage all parties to focus on this common threat, which has not subsided, and to work toward a cessation of hostilities, as agreed in Munich.”

Hezbollah, Syrian Army push south towards Anadan in northern Aleppo

The Syrian Arab Army’s 154th Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division and their allies have been on a roll as of late, capturing several sites in the Aleppo Governorate’s northern countryside while the Islamist rebels continue their massive retreat along the strategic Aleppo-Gaziantep Highway.

On Saturday morning, the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group), Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki, the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen, and Jabhat Al-Shamiyah launched a counter-assault to recapture the Tannourah Quarries and the two hilltops that overlook this strategic village in northwestern Aleppo.

The Islamist rebels were successful in recapturing the sites that weere captured by the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies the day before in Mount Simeon.

However, not long after the Islamist rebels recaptured these sites, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies launched their own counter-assault, where they recaptured the hilltops and quarries that were seized by the Islamist rebels.

Following the capture of these sites, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies (specifically Hezbollah) reentered the village of Tannourah and pushed south towards the strategic town of ‘Anadan.

Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies are immersed in a violent battle inside Tannourah and Bayyanoun; if these villages are captured, they will be able to push further south and reverse the Islamist gains near the provincial capital.

Syrian Army retakes Jabal Rous and advances north to Kinsibba

Earlier today, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigagde of the Republican Guard – backed by the National Defense Forces, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade), Syrian Marines, and Muqawama Souri (Syrian Resistance) – capitalized on the crumbling defenses of the Islamist rebels and recaptured a strategic mountaintop in the northeastern Latakia.

The Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and their allies imposed full control over Jabal Rous (Russian Mountain) after a violent battle with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army’s “1st Coastal Brigade).

Following the capture of Jabal Al-Rous, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and their allies seized the small village of Majdal Khakhiyah in Jabal Al-Akrad (Kurdish Mountains), leaving the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra and the Free Syrian Army with their backs against the wall in northern Latakia.

Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces are just 1.5 km away from the imperative village of Kinsibba in Jabal Al-Akrad; if captured by the pro-government forces, they will have immediate access to the rebel stronghold of Jisr Al-Shughour in the Idlib Governorate.

The Islamist rebels have been able to hold off the Syrian Armed Forces for several weeks; however, it appears that their defenses are quickly crumbling as the pro-government forces press north towards Kinsibbba.

Syrian Arab Army captures Ara village amidst offensive in Latakia – Map update

Latakia-map.png

During the evening hours, the Syrian Arab Army captured the village of Aras in the Latakian countryside after a brief skirmish with rebel fighters of Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Qaeda). Due to mountainous terrain, tanks and artillery pieces were rendered largely useless for the battle; however, ground troops of the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard stormed the village from its western, southern and eastern flanks and thus forced rebel fighters to retreat further north.

Since October of 2015, government forces have captured dozens of villages from Islamist insurgents in the eastern and northern outskirts of Latakia province. Remarkably, the Syrian Arab Army has also captured the rebel strongholds of Salma and Rabiah which have otherwise been rebel-held since the summer of 2012. This offensive can partially be credited to the Russian Airforce which utilizes the Hmeymim Airbase near Latakia city as to combat Islamist rebels inside Syria.

For now, less than 10 kilometers set government troops and the Turkish border apart. If this area is captured by the Syrian Arab Army, such a maneuver would completely expel rebel forces from Latakia province and force them to retreat towards Idlib and Jisr al-Shigbour. The latter might possibly witness a huge battle in the near future if government soldiers are able to maintain the momentum and current rate of advance.

Syrian Army advances towards Tabaqa Military Airport: Tal Masbah captured

On Saturday evening in the Hama-Raqqa countryside, the Syrian Arab Army’s 555th Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade), Fouj Al-Joulan (Golani Regiment), and the pro-government Palestinian militia “Liwaa Al-Quds” (Jerusalem Brigade) – imposed full control over another hilltop near the Salamiyah-Raqqa Highway after a violent battle with the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) in the Ithriyah countryside.

According to a military source from the 555th Brigade, the Syrian Armed Forces captured the small hilltop of Tal Masbah, which is located just 15 km northeast of Ithriyah in the Hama Governorate; it was one of the last ISIS strongholds along the Salamiyah-Raqqa Highway.

The military source added that the ISIS militants entrenched at Tal Masbah fled northeast of the aforementioned hilltop towards the small desert village of Jubb Al-Qutna on the Raqqa-Hama border; this area is predominately contested between the government and the terrorist group.

In addition to advancing north of the Salamiyah-Raqqa Road, the Syrian Armed Forces continued their powerful assault on the ISIS terrorists near the strategic village of Zakiyah on the border of the Al-Raqqa Governorate.

Yesterday, the Syrian Armed Forces were able to establish full control over the Zakiyah crossroad, blocking ISIS’ primary supply route from Al-Raqqa to the east Hama countryside.

The Syrian Armed Forces are attempting to seize the imperative Tabaqa Military Airport in southwestern Al-Raqqa; it was captured by ISIS in August of 2014.

ISIS continues massive retreat as Syrian forces advance towards Tabaqa

Moments ago in the Al-Raqqa countryside, the Syrian Arab Army’s 555th Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade), Fouj Al-Joulan (Golani Regiment), and the pro-government Palestinian militia “Liwaa Al-Quds) – imposed full control over several hills surrounding the imperative village of Zakiyah along the Salamiyah-Raqqa Road.

According to a military source in the Al-Salamiyah District, the Syrian Armed Forces established control over several small hilltops that surround the village of Zakiyah in southern Al-Raqqa after a fierce battle with the so-called “Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham” (ISIS) this morning.

Recently, ISIS lost control of the Zakiyah crossroad that would allow them access to much of the Hama Governorate’s eastern countryside; this loss now leaves the terrorist group without a primary supply route to their stronghold at the town of ‘Aqayrib.
