Sturgeon
"Mikoyan-Gurevitch Izdeliye 33 (MiG-33 Foghorn acording ASSC-NATO nomeclature). Around 1980, the Mikoyan OKB design bureau began working on a very light “strike fighter” that was intended to be a direct competitor to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. This new Mikoyan design, designated Izdeliye 33 (Izd 33) (and variously translated as “Article 33”, “Project 33”, “Product 33”, or “Project R-33”), was of conventional layout and similar in appearance to the F-16. It was powered by a single Klimov RD-33 afterburning turbofan engine – the same engine used by the twin-engined MiG-29. While extensive wind-tunnel testing was conducted on the design, no prototypes were built since the Soviet Air Force (VVS) dropped its support for concept about 1986. The program was one of several victims of the VVS’ changing operational needs, financial constraints, and a growing preference for twin-engined,multirole designs. " -Greatest Planes that Never Were. With a single RD-33, that thing would be way more Gripen than Viper. Also, that text appears to have been ripped off verbatim by or from the Wikipedia article. Collimatrix
Also those air intakes appear to lack any sort of boundary layer separation. Sturgeon
Collimatrix
OK, I found some pictures of the original models: There appear to be variations on the horizontal stabs; some have F-15 style dogteeth, others don't, and some of the LERX have snags on them too. The intake appears variable too, but all versions appear to have 2D variable ramp inlets. There is some speculation that technical data from this project found its way to the FC-17 project. Collimatrix
The Sukhoi T-6, a fixed-wing prototype of what would eventually become the swing-wing SU-24 Fencer: This design had a pair of lift jets in the fuselage to shorten takeoff distance. In the end, Sukhoi decided that the swing-wing was a more practical approach. Belesarius

LostCosmonaut
Site I got it from said the MiG is doing about Mach .9 at this point (kind of skeptical about it being able to do top speed on the deck, just about all jets of the time are faster at high altitude).
